Preparation course for prospective volunteers

January 3, 2023

If the arrival of the New Year has got you thinking about taking on a new challenge or starting a new activity, why not consider volunteering.

Home-Start Goole and District has the perfect opportunity for people who want to get involved with something new this year and help to give back to people in the local community. The charity is running a Preparation Course for prospective volunteers throughout January to give them all the training and guidance they need to begin a voluntary role with the organisation. Anyone who is a parent themselves, or has experience of caring for children, for example a hands-on Aunt or Uncle, or someone who has worked with children, can volunteer with the charity and no prior experience or qualifications are required.

The course will cover topics such as safeguarding, confidentiality and more to help people prepare for the role of volunteer. With no written work, the course aims to be interesting and fun, with the Home-Start team saying that “life experiences, being a good listener, common sense and a sense of humour are more important than paper qualifications”. Home-Start is a voluntary organisation committed to supporting families with at least one child under the age of eight. Volunteers visit families in their own homes each week, offering support, friendship and practical help.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “We offer a unique service, recruiting and training unpaid volunteers from the local community who can provide sensitive and much needed friendship, support and advice to families during those early years when children are young. “Our volunteers are linked with a family, and they visit the family on a weekly basis in their own homes. By doing so Home-Start respects the dignity and identity of each family, responding to individual needs, and working together to help build confidence, strengthen relationships, and enable parents to give their children a better start in life.” The Preparation Course will take place at The Courtyard and will begin on Monday, January 9, running for four Mondays, from 9.15am - 2.45pm each week.  One of the volunteers who took part in the course previously said: "I love volunteering for Home-Start, I can make it fit in with my life and I love giving something back."

Once the course is complete the times/days a volunteer can give us will be to suit them. For more information or to book onto the course telephone 01405 769966 or email office@hsgoole.org.uk.
